We are honored to offer the traditional practice of Ashtanga yoga at You and the Mat | Oakland.  Our Ashtanga yoga program is led by Camille Aragon.  Ashtanga yoga is a vigorous daily practice that joins together breath and movement through a set series of postures.  Ashtanga yoga was popularized in the West by the many students of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.  According to Pattabhi Jois, this system of practice produces an internal heat which purifies the body, nervous system, and mind and awakens dormant energies.

At You and the Mat | Oakland we offer both Mysore classes Monday through Friday from 6:30am to 9:00am and Led classes on Sundays from 10:30am to 12:000pm.

The term “Mysore” is derived from a city in Southern India where Pattabhi Jois taught for over 70 years. Mysore style is an effective and safe way to learn Ashtanga yoga. In this traditional way of transmission, each student is able to learn at his or her own pace in the support of a group environment. Practitioners receive individual guidance and soft-spoken individualized instruction when necessary in a quiet meditative setting. Mysore classes therefore allow the student to learn yoga at a pace specifically tailored for his or her specific needs, abilities, and level of strength, endurance, and flexibility.

Mysore classes allow a flexible start time, meaning you may come and start your practice anytime between the scheduled hours. Don’t worry, the class is not two and half hours long! An average practice takes an hour to an hour and a half, with beginners ranging from 30 to 45 minutes. Simply leave enough time to finish your practice before the scheduled class time window ends.

The Led Primary Series classes offer the complete first series of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Pattabhi Jois. Posture names and vinyasa counts will be given in Sanskrit, accompanied by thoughtful instruction. This class is appropriate for intermediate students wanting to improve and grow in their Ashtanga Yoga practice.

*  All Auto-Pay Unlimited Memberships require a 90 day commitment and automatically renew thereafter.  30 days advanced written notice required to cancel.

**  Schedule and Teachers are subject to change.  All single class drop-in, package and membership purchases are non-refundable and non-transferable.

***  About Suspending a Membership:

  • A 30 day notice is required if a member wishes to suspend his/her membership.  Without this notice, a $50.00 processing fee will be applied.
  • Members are allowed to suspend a membership one time per contract year; suspensions can be between 2 weeks to 3 months in length.
  • If a member wishes to suspend his/her membership a second time within a year, a $50.00 processing fee with be applied.
